The Suspicious Minds and Snacktime Book Club, which was formed as a result of my book, welcomed me with welcome arms, food, and gifts when I showed up for their fifth meeting about my book. This book club impressed me so much. They came with lists of questions, and when discussing the book in one of their earlier meetings, bought a map of Vietnam to see where Jack and I had been. They had a gift bag for me containing items a detective should have including disguises), as well as a wood bookmark with “Because” engraved in the same font as on the front cover of the book. The meal they had prepared for their meeting with me had a theme about the book, and we ate delicious Spring Rolls from a local Vietnamese restaurant, pigs in a blanket with Air America insignia and wings, and other homemade dishes and desserts made by the club members. Although this author event was small in number, it will always be one of the most memorable; proof that good things can come in small packages.
