Last night in Crestview Hills, Kentucky, I met with a fantastic group of men, all of whom are affiliated with the Lutheran Church. They chose my investigative memoir, Because: A CIA Coverup and a Son’s Odyssey to Find the Father they Never Knew, as the book for their club to read and study this month. What’s really incredible is that I never intended for my book to take on a spiritual theme. Still, after encountering numerous miraculous experiences during my odyssey that my training as a research scientist could not explain, I had to rely on my faith and the guidance of others to help me make sense of how this connection between my father and me was helping to solve the mysteries of his death and expose a CIA coverup of it. Apparently, my father’s faith, his speaking truth to power, and his love for others, as described in Matthew 25:40, “the least of us, among us,” is of great appeal to others with a sense of social justice and a desire to continue Christ’s work.
